Wat betekent “dat klopt” in het Nederlands?

The verb kloppen literally means "to knock," but Dutch has stretched it metaphorically to mean "to fit together" or "to add up." Dat klopt is the everyday confirmation phrase that means "that's right" or "that adds up." A Dutch accountant says dat klopt about numbers; a Dutch friend says dat klopt about a recollected anecdote; a Dutch teacher says dat klopt when a student gets the answer right.

The phrase sits at the neutral-to-warm end of the confirmation scale. Where zeker (certainly) is emphatic and ja hoor is reassuring, dat klopt is matter-of-fact. It's the standard tool for confirming a fact, a date, a price, a calculation. In customer-service contexts, dat klopt is what a Dutch cashier says when reading back an order, what a Dutch receptionist says when confirming a booking, what a Dutch parent says when a kid recites a memory correctly.
