Wat betekent “kan ik” in het Nederlands?

Kan ik uses the modal kunnen (to be able) and asks about capability, not permission. The distinction matters in Dutch in ways it doesn't in English. Kan ik dit doen asks "am I able to do this" (capability); mag ik dit doen asks "am I allowed to do this" (permission). Dutch speakers expect each modal in its proper context, and slipping the wrong one in produces a slightly odd sentence.

In practice, kan ik shows up in three useful patterns. First, asking about ability: "Kan ik dit alleen oplossen?" (can I solve this alone?). Second, asking for help: "Kan ik je iets vragen?" (can I ask you something?) — though Dutch is shifting toward mag ik for this register. Third, in self-doubt: "Kan ik dit wel?" (am I really able to do this?), where the wel particle adds a layer of self-questioning.

For learners: kan ik before a verb is asking about your own ability. If you're trying to order, request, or get permission, mag ik is the cleaner choice.
