Wat betekent “wil je” in het Nederlands?

Wil je uses willen (to want) and pulls double duty: it asks about desire ("do you want some?") and it makes offers ("would you like some?"). Dutch hosts use it constantly to offer food, drinks, help, attention. Wil je koffie (would you like coffee) is the standard Dutch hospitality opener; wil je dat ik je help (do you want me to help you) is how Dutch speakers offer assistance.

The phrase is gentler than mag ik (may I) because the offer-version puts the listener in control of the ask. A Dutch person saying wil je dat ik even langskom (do you want me to come over) is checking before committing — it's the polite way to suggest a plan without imposing.

In requests, wil je can carry slight emphasis or impatience. Wil je dat even doen (will you do that) said sharply is closer to a command than a question. Dutch parents to teens reach for this version when they're tired of asking. Tone disambiguates between offer and command.
