Wat betekent “even kijken” in het Nederlands?

Even is the Dutch time-softener that turns any verb into "just briefly" or "for a sec." Even kijken literally means "look briefly," but functionally it's the Dutch equivalent of "let me see," "let me check," or "hold on." With over 300 instances in the Reelang corpus, it's one of the most-spoken phrases in everyday Dutch.

Dutch speakers reach for even kijken whenever they need a beat to retrieve information: looking up a fact on their phone, pulling up a calendar, scanning a menu, scrolling for a price. The phrase also opens explainer videos and tutorials: laten we even kijken naar (let's just look at) is a near-universal Dutch segue. Customer-service workers use it to telegraph "I'm checking the system": even kijken hoor (let me just see).

The same even attaches to almost any verb — even wachten, even denken, even checken, even pauze. The pattern is so productive that even alone, as a particle, ranks among the most-used Dutch words in spoken conversation.
