What does “parisuhde” mean in Finnish?
This stand-up set turns on relationship jokes: «parisuhteessa on tärkeetä, että sen osapuolet täydentää toisiaan» (“in a relationship, it’s important that the partners complement each other”). Parisuhde is the everyday Finnish word for a romantic relationship, built from pari (“pair”) plus suhde (“relation”).
It’s a quietly Nordic concept: a parisuhde need not mean marriage, and Finns also speak of avoliitto (living together) and seurustelu (dating). The comic mines the word for dark twists about complementing, completing, and surviving each other. For learners, parisuhde is the neutral, grown-up way to talk about being with someone.
