What does “chukjibeop” mean in Korean?

A mysterious figure teleports someone home and explains how: «도술로 땏을 접은 거야» (“I folded the land with sorcery”), it’s 축지법 (chukjibeop). The word means “the method of contracting the earth,” the legendary art of folding distance so a thousand miles fit into a single stride.

It’s a staple of Korean and East Asian folklore, the trick of the 도사 (dosa, a Taoist sage) and of martial-arts heroes in countless 사극 (sageuk, period dramas). Here it’s played for laughs: breakfast in New York, lunch in Paris. A wonderfully specific word for what English needs a whole phrase, “folding space to teleport”, to say.
