What does “00后 (linglinghou)” mean in Chinese?

00后 (líng líng hòu)
noun
The post-2000 generation (China’s Gen Z)

This workplace skit stars a 00后当老板, a 00后 who’s become the boss. 00后 (líng líng hòu) means people born from 2000 onward, China’s Gen Z. The 后 (hòu) means “after,” so the spoken form is líng líng hòu, “the after-2000s.” The young boss runs the office by MBTI, 星座 (xīngzuò) (star signs), and 搭子 (dāzi) (activity buddies).

China labels every cohort this way: 80后 (bālíng hòu), 90后, 00后, 10后, each with its own stereotype in the media. The 00后 are famous for 整顿职场, “shaking up the workplace”, refusing the overwork their elders accepted. Learn the X后 system and you can read a huge amount of Chinese social commentary.
