What does “verduras” mean in Spanish?
Verduras is the everyday Spanish word for vegetables, and it is built on verde, “green”: verde plus the ending -ura gives “greenery,” and from there “greens.” So a plate of verduras is literally a plate of greens, even when it holds a carrot. Knowing that link makes the word stick, and it explains why a shop can call itself verdulería and a greengrocer verdulero.
The clip’s title, verduras verdes, is “green greens,” which is why the teacher lists only green things: la coliflor, el brócoli, el repollo, la verza, las acelgas, las espinacas, el apio, el puerro, las judías verdes, los guisantes. The last two are Spain’s words and they travel worst: in Mexico, for example, green beans are ejotes and peas chícharos, and other countries have names of their own. Verduras itself is the same everywhere.
