Wat doe je is the Dutch version of "what are you doing" — and like English, the phrase has two distinct lives depending on tone. Neutral wat doe je is a curious or check-in question (what are you up to). Sharp wat doe je is protest or alarm (what on earth are you doing). Dutch speakers don't disambiguate by word choice; tone does the work.

The phrase often appears with the modal nou (now) for the protest reading: wat doe je nou (what on earth are you doing) is what a Dutch parent yells when a kid does something inadvisable. Without nou, the phrase reads as neutral curiosity. With nou, it's flagged as a complaint.

The phrase also handles pre-task check-in — Dutch friends sending each other a SMS will often write wat doe je the way English speakers write "wyd?" — a casual ping asking about current activity. The reply is usually a short verb phrase: werken, koken, niks.
