Wat betekent “toch niet” in het Nederlands?

Toch niet is the negative cousin of toch wel. Where toch wel affirms against an expectation of denial, toch niet expects a negative answer and invites the listener to confirm it. The closest English match is "you're not... are you?" or "surely not."

A Dutch parent walking into the living room and seeing a kid mid-tablet says "Je bent toch niet weer aan het gamen?" — they expect the answer to be "no, just for a sec" and are inviting that response rather than accusing. Dutch handles a lot of polite challenge this way; English would lean on intonation or a more direct question. The toch signals "I expect the answer is no, please tell me I'm right."

The phrase also functions as a mid-statement softener meaning "really not" or "not actually": "Het is toch niet zo erg" (it's really not that bad). Here toch reaches back to an unspoken worry the listener might have been entertaining, and offers reassurance.
