Wat betekent “mag ik” in het Nederlands?

Dutch separates "may I" from "can I" more cleanly than English does. Mag ik uses mogen (to be allowed), which always signals permission or request; kan ik uses kunnen (to be able), which signals capability. A Dutch person ordering coffee says mag ik een koffie (may I have a coffee) — they're requesting, not testing whether ordering is physically possible. Most English-speaking learners use kan ik by default and have to retrain; mag ik is the polite ordering and asking-for-things default.

The phrase is the standard Dutch tool for any kind of polite request: ordering, borrowing, asking permission, joining a queue. Mag ik even langs (may I get past), mag ik dat lenen (may I borrow that), mag ik je iets vragen (may I ask you something) — all the everyday social asks land here. Dutch service workers expect mag ik; using kan ik sounds slightly off, the way English "can I have" sounds slightly off in fancy restaurants.

The phrase also opens questions to children: mag ik even kijken naar je tekening (can I look at your drawing) — the mogen signals respect for the kid's autonomy.
