Wat betekent “laat maar” in het Nederlands?

If kom maar is Dutch's invitation, laat maar is Dutch's polite shrug. The literal sense is "just let (it)," but the everyday meaning is "forget it," "never mind," or "drop it." Dutch speakers reach for it when they've changed their mind mid-sentence, when an explanation isn't worth giving, or when they're brushing off a complaint.

The phrase has three operational uses depending on context. After a request that's been declined, laat maar means "OK, forget I asked." Mid-thought, laat maar means "never mind what I was about to say." As a response to someone offering help, laat maar means "don't bother, I've got it." That last use is the one expats notice first: a Dutch person waving off help with a single laat maar feels brusquer than English "no thanks," but it's the standard polite decline.
