Uitdrukking in het Nederlands
Wat betekent “eigenlijk wel” in het Nederlands?
A Dutch reluctant affirmative — "actually, yes" — agreeing after initial hesitation.
Wat het betekent
Eigenlijk wel is what a Dutch speaker says when their first instinct was to disagree but, on reflection, they actually do agree. Eigenlijk alone means "actually" with a strong sense of self-correction; wel affirms positively. Together they signal "wait, when I think about it, yes." The phrase pairs naturally with raised eyebrows and a brief pause for thought.
Dutch friends asking each other if they want to grab coffee will often hear eigenlijk wel in response — meaning "I wasn't going to, but yes." Dutch speakers describing food they ended up enjoying after low expectations will reach for eigenlijk wel lekker. The phrase carries a built-in surprise: the speaker's revised opinion is the news.
A second use: defending a position against someone else's doubt. If a Dutch friend says "you don't actually like that band, do you?" the answer eigenlijk wel asserts "no really, I do." Same construction, defensive register.
