What’s the difference between “gaaru” and “gaadu” in Telugu?

On the talent show Drama Juniors, the whole joke rides on one syllable: was the contestant told to say “Anil gaaru” or “Anil gaadu”? గారు (gaaru) is Telugu’s respectful honorific, “Mr / sir / madam”, added after a name. గాడు (gaadu) is the opposite: a rude, dismissive “that guy.”
So “అనిల్ గారు” honours Anil, while “అనిల్ గాడు” insults him, hence the on-stage panic. Telugu marks respect with these endings the way English uses “Mr” or tone of voice: గారు lifts someone up, గాడు knocks them down. One vowel decides whether you’re polite or picking a fight.
