What does “varsågod” mean in Swedish?

Swedish does three polite jobs with one word: varsågod. Hand someone a thing — varsågod. Someone thanks you — varsågod. Wave a guest to a seat — var så god och sitt. It literally means “be so kind” (var = be, så = so, god = good). English needs three different phrases here, but Swedish just reaches for the same word every time.

In the clip the host holds out the toilet roll and says “Varsågod” — the plain “here you go” sense. It is the same word a shop worker uses sliding your change across the counter, or a host setting a dish in front of you. For a group you say varsågoda (“varsågoda och ta för er” — please, help yourselves). It fits anywhere, polite or relaxed, which is why it feels so handy once you start hearing it.
