What does “slå in” mean in Swedish?
Swedish cashiers say slå in — literally “strike in” — where English speakers say “ring up.” The name comes from the old days of hammering down a price key. In the clip, a veteran cashier with 30 (“I mean 20, but I round up”) years at the till shares her shortcut: slå in every fruit as apple, code 41. One code, no fuss — and the old word suddenly fits.
Slå in works for anything scanned or keyed at a register: “Slå in tomaterna” = “ring up the tomatoes.” The verb slå in has other meanings too — a guess can slå in (come true), a storm can slå in (hit) — but in a butik (shop) it means to enter a price or produce code. Code 41 is the standard one for a red apple. The trick works because most fruit is sold by weight, so the total comes out about right and the line keeps moving. The real payoff is her confidence — “Is it you or me who has worked here 30 years?” — and the way she rounds her own years up.
