What does “skitläskigt” mean in Swedish?

Swedes stick skit- (“shit”) onto almost any adjective to mean “really”: skitbra (really good), skitkul (so fun), skitläskigt (really scary). It sounds rude, but in everyday talk it is closer to “damn” or “super.” A contestant on Love Is Blind Sverige sums up the feeling: falling for someone you have never even seen is, well, skitläskigt.

The base word läskig means “scary” or “creepy.” Add skit- in front and you get skitläskigt = really scary. Even though skit- means “shit,” used this way it carries almost no shock — Swedes say it freely, even with family. You will hear it all over reality TV, YouTube, and casual chat. In the clip, a contestant explains why the Love Is Blind setup unsettles her: “Det är skitläskigt att bli kär i någon som man inte ens har sett” (“It’s so scary to fall in love with someone you haven’t even seen”).
