What does “cochino” mean when nothing is actually dirty?
Cochino literally means “pig” or “filthy,” but Spanish speakers often use it as a pure intensifier of annoyance, with no literal dirt involved at all — closer to English “this darn thing” than any real accusation of mess. In this clip, someone fighting with a stubborn bottle cap grumbles esta cochina cosa ya abrió, “this darn thing finally opened,” aimed purely at the bottle’s stubbornness, not its cleanliness.
The pattern shows up in set phrases too: cochino dinero (“filthy money,” used to dismiss something as not worth the trouble) and envidia cochina (“filthy envy,” for petty jealousy) both use cochino the same way — as disgust or frustration dialed up, detached from anything actually being dirty. Placed before the noun like this, it’s doing an adjective’s emotional work, not a literal description.
