What does “замешкался” mean in Russian?
Замешкался is the perfective past of замешкаться — to be caught flat-footed for a moment, to falter when reality doesn’t match your plan. It’s not just slowness; it’s that specific freeze when you’re briefly at a loss. Russian uses one compact word where English needs a whole clause: “he paused, thrown off, not sure how to respond.”
The verb comes from мешкать (to dawdle, to tarry) with the perfective prefix за- and reflexive -ся, turning a general slowness into a single sudden hesitation. The reflexive suffix is key: the subject acts on himself — he gets tangled up, stumbles inside. In the clip, Jensen Huang’s corn-queue gambit backfires: the crowd tells him they’ve already paid and are just waiting.
