What does “trening” mean in Romanian?
In Romanian, trening is a piece of clothing, not an activity — it’s a tracksuit or sweatsuit, the matching soft top and trousers you’d wear at the gym or lounging at home. It was borrowed from English “training,” but the meaning narrowed to just the outfit. So if a Romanian says they’re putting on their trening, they mean the comfy two-piece, never that they’re heading off to train.
The plural is treninguri, and a single piece may be a bluză de trening (the top) or pantaloni de trening (the bottoms). Here the speaker shows off a velvet one — un training, dar acesta este din catifea — gushing that it’s wonderfully soft, and you can hear the English-flavoured training and the everyday Romanian trening blur together. For the English sense of professional training, Romanian keeps the original spelling and pronunciation, training (“treining”) — so the two words live side by side, one for clothes and one for courses.
