What does “îmi face toate poftele” mean in Romanian?
In Romanian, a poftă is a craving or appetite — the same word in poftă bună, “enjoy your meal.” So îmi face toate poftele literally says someone “does all my cravings,” and it means they indulge your every whim or want. A girlfriend bragging am un iubit care-mi face toate poftele is saying her boyfriend gives her whatever she desires — and happily foots the bill.
The pattern is a face pofta / poftele cuiva — “to satisfy someone’s craving(s).” It works for spoiled children as much as doted-on partners: i se fac toate poftele means “her every whim gets met.” Surprisingly, poftă isn’t Latin: it’s of Slavic origin (Proto-Slavic \xotěti, “to want”). The same root threads through everyday Romanian, from the mealtime wish poftă bună to n-am poftă* (“I don’t feel like it”).
