What does “fain” mean in Romanian?

Fain (feminine faină) is how people — especially in Transylvania (Ardeal) — say something is cool, nice, or great. Where standard Romanian reaches for frumos (“beautiful”) or bun (“good”), the north leans on fain — for a new kitchen, a meal, a person, almost anything you like. It’s the region’s all-purpose compliment, and dropping it instantly flavours your Romanian as northern and casual.

The word is borrowed straight from German fein (“fine, refined”), a legacy of Transylvania’s long Saxon presence — so it lines up neatly with English “fine” and Polish fajny. It bends like any adjective: fain (masc.), faină (fem.), faini/faine (plural), and you’ll hear foarte fain (“really cool”) or ce fain! (“how nice!”).
