What does 'közbevág' mean in Hungarian?
Közbevág is a Hungarian compound verb built from közbe (in between) + vág (to cut). It means to interrupt, but the imagery is sharper than the English version: you’re slicing into someone else’s sentence with your own. Hungarian builds many verbs this way: félbeszakít (cut in half = stop), kimegy (out-go = exit), belevág (cut into = launch into).
In this clip, a Hungarian speaker names what annoys him: someone asks him a question and then közbevág before he can finish his answer. « Felteszem nekem egy kérdést [...] és nem várja meg, hogy válaszoljak, hanem közbevág » (they ask me a question [...] and don’t wait for my answer, they cut in). « Ez nagyon tud bosszantani » (that can really annoy me).
