What does “c’est bon” mean in French?

Learners meet c’est bon as “it tastes good.” In conversation it works much harder: “that’s fine,” “I’ve got it,” “we’re done,” “that’s enough.” Someone hunting for a piece in a game shouts c’est bon, c’est bon ! meaning “found it — stop helping.” Intonation carries the meaning: relaxed, it signs off on a situation; sharp, it is ça suffit.

Useful pairs: C’est bon pour moi (“works for me”), C’est bon, j’arrive (“okay, coming”), Bon, c’est bon ! (“right, that’s enough”). Don’t treat c’est bon and c’est bien as automatic swaps: c’est bon often closes a situation, while c’est bien more often judges quality, behaviour, or how well something was done.
