What does “bancal” mean in French?

Bancal describes something that will not stand straight: a table with one short leg, a chair that rocks. The figurative use is where it earns its keep — un raisonnement bancal is shaky reasoning, un scénario bancal is a plot that doesn’t hold together, un accord bancal is a deal built on nothing solid. The image survives the jump intact: off-balance, and liable to tip.

It is usually traced back to banc, a bench, whose legs were often set at splayed angles; the older sense described bow-legged people and animals. The feminine is bancale, and unusually for an -al adjective the masculine plural is bancals, not bancaux. This clip uses it as film criticism — le scénario est vraiment bancal — while still ranking the film fifth.
