What does “sehr mitgenommen” mean in German?

The actor describes the saddest scene he ever filmed: doctors carry out his TV son’s organs in cases, and his character breaks down. He then says it hit him for real too: “Das hat mich auch als Schauspieler sehr mitgenommen.” Literally, mitnehmen means to take along — but here it means the experience shook him and stayed with him. He is a father himself, so the scene got to him as a person, not only as an actor.
