What does “Kondensstreifen” mean in German?
Kondensstreifen is German for contrail — those long white streaks aircraft draw across a blue sky. The compound snaps together Kondens- (condensation, from Latin condensare, “to press together”) and Streifen (stripe or trail). That pairing does exactly what German compounds do best: it names both cause and visual in one noun. Contrary to a widespread myth, Kondensstreifen aren’t leaked fuel — they’re engine-exhaust water vapour that freezes instantly into ice crystals at altitude.
The clip builds to the reveal: after showing real fluid drains and fuel-quality checks on the ground, it closes with the correction — “Die zwei weißen Streifen, die Flugzeuge am Himmel hinterlassen, sind kein abgelassener Treibstoff. Es sind Kondensstreifen, also Wasserdampf, der zu Eiskristallen wird.” The word lands with the weight of the whole myth-busting sequence behind it. English borrowed the same idea but compressed it into the blend contrail (condensation + trail); German keeps the pieces visible, which makes the word self-explanatory once you know Streifen.
