What does “Streicheleinheiten” mean in German?
Andi Borg is talking about why his live tour matters more than his TV show. On stage he gets the direct Streicheleinheiten from the crowd — the clapping and cheering he can feel in the moment. The word joins streicheln (to stroke or pet) with Einheiten (units), so it literally means petting units: small doses of affection. He says it warmly and with a little humour for the feeling a studio camera cannot give him.
Spoken line: “Für ihn seien die direkten Streicheleinheiten und die Klatscheinheiten des Publikums unabdingbar.” — “For him, the direct doses of affection and the applause from the audience are essential.” German often glues two nouns together to name one idea: streicheln (to stroke) + Einheiten (units) = doses of affection. The clip even coins a matching word right after: Klatscheinheiten (klatschen = to clap), so “units of clapping.” Plain examples: - “Mein Hund braucht jeden Abend seine Streicheleinheiten.” — My dog needs his bit of cuddling every evening. - “Nach der harten Woche tun mir ein paar Streicheleinheiten gut.” — After a hard week, a little tenderness does me good. Usage notes: it is friendly and warm, often slightly playful. People use it for real cuddles (pets, partners) and, like Andi Borg here, for the emotional “petting” of applause and attention. Note the weak e sound in the -en endings of streicheln and Einheiten.
