What does “atmen aleek” mean in Egyptian Arabic?

A dad buys his son a phone line so the boy can reach him, then regrets it when the calls never stop. His exasperated line, «انا بطمن عليك بس» (“I’m only checking on you”), turns on اطمن عليك (aṭmen ʿaleek), from the root for reassurance. To “eṭmen ʿala” someone is to call or drop by just to make sure they’re fine.

It’s less a question than a small act of care, the reason Egyptian parents and aunts phone for no apparent reason. The reply is usually اطمن (eṭmen), “rest easy, I’m fine.” The phrase carries the warmth, and the gentle smothering, of Egyptian family life in three syllables.
