Moving our database in next to the site
Lined up and coming soon.
Everything Reelang knows, the videos, the words, what you've watched and saved, sits in a Postgres database hosted by Neon. We're moving it onto AWS, into the same data centre as the servers that run the site, so a page asking the database a question no longer sends that question out across the internet and waits for the answer to come back.
Neon charges for every byte that leaves it, and with more learners watching more videos that has climbed faster than anything else we pay for. Putting the two side by side takes it away, and it makes pages quicker for you at the same time. What we give up is the easy life: backups, updates and failover become ours to handle. The site moves off Vercel first and the database follows after, so if anything does get slower we know which move to blame.
Votes are how this climbs the list, and we read every one.
