遺憾 (yíhàn) is the Mandarin word for a particular kind of disappointment. It’s heavier than English regret and softer than grief. It’s what you feel about an outcome that should have gone the other way: a missed opportunity, a chance you didn’t take, a goodbye left unsaid. In journalism, 表示遺憾 (express 遺憾) is the diplomatic way to register dissatisfaction without accusation.
