What does “浮力 (fuli)” mean in Chinese?
Retelling the real Eureka story, this video explains why a giant ship can float, thanks to 浮力 (fúlì), buoyancy. The word is wonderfully literal: 浮 (fú) means “to float” and 力 (lì) means “force,” so 浮力 is “floating-force.” It’s the heart of 阿基米德定律 (Archimedes' principle): an object is pushed up by a force equal to the weight of water it displaces.
Two productive patterns hide in here. 浮 builds many words: 浮动 (to float, to fluctuate), 漂浮 (to drift), even 浮夸 (flashy, over-the-top). And 力 is the standard suffix for forces: 引力 (gravity), 压力 (pressure), 摩擦力 (friction). Learn 浮力 and you’ve cracked a whole science vocabulary.
