What does “brukar” mean in Swedish?
Swedish has a verb just for things you do habitually: brukar. English adds a word like “usually” (“I usually answer”). Swedish puts brukar in front and the next verb stays in its plain form: “brukar svara.” And here’s the bonus — change it to the past, brukade, and it means “used to.” So jag brukar svara is “I usually answer,” and jag brukade svara is “I used to answer.”
In the clip, Jörgen uses brukar twice in a row: people “usually ask” him about football tactics, and he “usually answers” that he doesn’t know. The dry humor lands because he says it so plainly — brukar makes the whole thing sound routine and a little resigned. The verb comes from an older Swedish word, bruka, meaning “to use,” and it’s related to German brauchen. You can still hear that older sense once in a while (brukar du salt? — “do you use salt?”), but in everyday speech its main job now is marking a habit. Switch to brukade and the meaning shifts cleanly to past habit: jag brukade svara — “I used to answer,” but not anymore. That present-and-past pair makes it one handy little word to learn early.
