What does “no me di cuenta” mean in Spanish?
A bit tipsy, she has stumbled up to the wrong floor — the 6th, when home is one floor down. When the man points it out, she laughs it off: “Ay, ay, no me di cuenta.” It means “I didn’t realise.” You use it whenever something slipped past you — a wrong door, a price, a hint someone dropped. It is the natural, friendly way to admit a small mistake without making a big deal of it.
In the clip: “Ay, ay, no me di cuenta.” — “Oh, oh, I didn’t realise.” “No me di cuenta” comes from “darse cuenta,” to notice or realise. Add “no” and you admit something got past you. A few everyday uses: - “Perdón, no me di cuenta de que estabas hablando.” — “Sorry, I didn’t realise you were talking.” - “No me di cuenta de la hora.” — “I didn’t notice the time.” - “¿Te diste cuenta?” — “Did you notice?” Notes: it works for missing a physical thing (the wrong floor) and for missing a social hint. When you mention what you missed, “de” usually follows: “no me di cuenta de que…” In fast speech the “di” and the weak e sound in “me” blur together, so listen for the whole chunk “no-me-di-cuenta” rather than four separate words.
