What does “la mare” mean in Romanian?

In Romanian you don’t “go to the beach” — you go la mare, literally “to the sea.” It’s the everyday way to say you’re off to the seaside, meaning the Black Sea coast. Notice there’s no article: the noun is bare mare, not marea (“the sea”). That bare-noun pattern after la is exactly what marks it as a fixed destination phrase rather than a literal “to a sea.”

Its natural partner is la munte, “to the mountains” (the Carpathians) — the two stock Romanian holiday answers, immortalised in the classic 1971 comedy B.D. la munte și la mare. The same article-dropping logic powers other destinations: la școală (“to school”), la muncă (“to work”), la țară (“to the countryside”). So when a child here says să mă duc la mare (“to go to the seaside”), they’re reaching for the most ordinary holiday phrase a Romanian knows.
