What is the difference between “umieć” and “móc”?

English “can” is two different verbs in Polish. Umieć is learned ability — umiem pływać, “I know how to swim.” Móc is possibility or permission — mogę pływać, “I can swim (now, here, I’m allowed to).” The sister in this clip is the perfect illustration: she’s scared of the water, yet it turns out she umie pływać — she knows how, even when fear says she can’t.

The pair shows up the moment you want to say “I can”: umiem gotować (I know how to cook) vs. mogę gotować dziś (I can cook tonight). Mixing them is the classic learner tell — mogę pływać said about a skill sounds like you’re asking permission to enter the pool. Rule of thumb: if you could add “I learned to,” use umieć.
