What does “arbuz” mean in Polish?
This kitchen hack shows the fast way to cut one up: «Kiedy kroisz arbuza na pół» (“when you cut a watermelon in half”). Arbuz is “watermelon,” and its travels are a story in themselves.
The word came to Polish from Persian (xarbuza, “melon”) by way of Turkic, the same root behind Russian арбуз and echoed across the region. So a summer fruit carries a little Silk Road in its name. Pair arbuz with the verb kroić (“to cut”) and you’re ready for the picnic.
