How do you say “Happy Mother’s Day” in Finnish?
Amid a chaotic breakfast in bed, the kids manage the words that matter: «Hyvää äitienpäivää!» (“Happy Mother’s Day!”). The phrase shows off a core Finnish pattern: well-wishes start with Hyvää (“good,” in the partitive case) plus the occasion. So äitienpäivä (“mother’s day”) becomes Hyvää äitienpäivää.
The formula is everywhere: Hyvää huomenta (“good morning”), Hyvää päivää (“good day”), Hyvää joulua (“merry Christmas”), Hyvää viikonloppua (“good weekend”). That extra -a/-ä ending is the partitive, quietly meaning “[I wish you] some good [day].” Learn the pattern once and you can wish a Finn well on any occasion.
