How do you say hello in Telugu?

నమస్కారం (namaskaram)
interjection · Telugu
“hello / greetings (a respectful traditional greeting)”

A family opens its very first vlog the traditional way: «అందరికీ నమస్కారం ఫ్రెండ్స్» (“greetings to everyone, friends”). నమస్కారం (namaskaram) is the respectful Telugu hello, used for one person or a whole audience.

It comes from Sanskrit namaḥ (“bowing, salutation”), the same root as the pan-Indian namaste and Kannada/Tamil namaskara, and traditionally pairs with folded hands. It works for “hello” and “goodbye” alike. Note how the family still slips in English ఫ్రెండ్స్ (friends) right after, the warm formality of namaskaram, then straight into casual Tenglish.

Waar je dit hoort
  • As the opening greeting of Telugu vlogs, news, and speeches.
  • With folded hands (a respectful añjali) across South India.
  • Shared with Sanskrit-rooted namaste and Kannada namaskara.
  • In Telugu phone calls and formal welcomes.
