What does “садовое кольцо” mean in Russian?

Садовое кольцо — “Garden Ring” — is not a park: it is a 16-kilometre circular road that marks the boundary of Moscow’s historic centre. Садовое means “garden” and кольцо means “ring,” but the name is a relic of the 1820s, when anyone building along the route had to plant trees. Those trees were felled in the 1930s. Today it is a wide, busy road — and the pattern [adjective] + кольцо unlocks Moscow’s whole concentric street logic.

Inside the садовое кольцо sits a smaller loop: the бульварное кольцо (“Boulevard Ring”), which is actually shaped more like a horseshoe (подкова) than a true ring, as it doesn’t close in the south where it meets the Moskva River. Both names follow the same formula — just swap the adjective — so once you know кольцо you can read half the city’s geography. The Kremlin and Red Square (Красная площадь) sit at the very centre of this nested system.
