What does “облепиховый чай” mean in Russian?

Облепиховый чай is sea-buckthorn tea — one of the most distinctly Russian things you can order in a café. Облепиха (sea buckthorn) gets its name from the verb облепить, “to coat on all sides,” because the small, intensely orange berries press densely against the branches. The result is a tart, vitamin-packed hot drink that Russians have treated as a folk remedy and cold-weather staple since Soviet times.

In the clip a customer orders: “Будьте добры, нам чай облепиховый” — literally “be so kind, for us sea-buckthorn tea” — the polite phrasing будьте добры (“would you be so kind”) being the standard Russian way to make a café request. Sea-buckthorn tea typically arrives with ginger, honey, and sometimes chilli, and is served by the кружка (mug) or in a 500 ml pot. The berry is so associated with Siberia it’s nicknamed Золото Сибири (“Gold of Siberia”), so ordering it is both practical and unmistakably local.
