What does “je veux bien” mean in French?

Word for word, je veux bien looks like “I want it a lot.” It is actually the everyday way to accept something: Tu veux un café ? — Je veux bien. The bien softens vouloir instead of strengthening it, turning a blunt “I want” into a willing, polite yes. Bare je veux, by contrast, can land as demanding, which is why learners are steered towards je voudrais.
