What does “pila” mean in Spanish besides “battery”?

Pila most often means “battery,” the word behind this PSA’s warning never to toss a pila in the trash. But the same four letters do several other jobs in Spanish: a pila bautismal is a church’s baptismal font, a pila can be a stone kitchen sink or wash basin in parts of Latin America, and una pila de (algo) means “a pile/stack of” something in everyday speech — tengo una pila de tareas, “I have a pile of homework.”

All senses trace back to the same Latin root, pila, meaning a mortar or stone basin — a container shape that battery cells, baptismal fonts, and stacked piles all loosely share. The video’s warning is a real one: a single improperly discarded battery can contaminate roughly 3,000 liters of water with lead, mercury, and cadmium.
