What does “digo” mean when Spanish speakers use it mid-sentence?
Digo is just decir (“to say”) in the “I” form, but mid-sentence it works as a live self-correction — the Spanish equivalent of English “I mean.” In this clip, a dad walks back his own confession one word at a time: me ha costado mucho robar. Digo, desviarlo. Perdón, obtenerlo — “cost me a lot to steal. I mean, divert. Sorry, obtain” — each digo swapping in a softer word.
This kind of on-the-fly repair is extremely common in spoken Spanish and shows up as digo, o sea, or quiero decir, all doing the same job of catching yourself and rephrasing. What makes this clip funny is how transparent the euphemism ladder is — robar to desviar to obtener each sound more legitimate while describing the exact same act, and digo is the hinge that flags each swap.
