What does “chashm” mean in Persian?
In this pregnancy sketch, a henpecked husband answers his demanding wife the same way every time: «چشم چشم، هر کاری بگی میکنم» (“yes, yes, I’ll do whatever you say”). چشم (chashm) literally means “eye,” but as a reply it means “yes, certainly, as you wish,” as if to say “I’ll do it with my own eyes.”
It’s a cornerstone of Persian politeness and تعارف (taarof), the elaborate etiquette of deference. You’ll hear روی چشم (“upon my eye”) and به چشم for extra warmth. Said sincerely it’s gracious; said through gritted teeth, as here, it’s the universal sound of giving in for peace.
