What is a Hungarian gyógyfürdő?

Hungarians don’t really have “spas.” They have gyógyfürdő, literally gyógy (“cure”) plus fürdő (“bath”). The country sits on hundreds of natural thermal springs, and visiting one isn’t a treat-yourself afternoon: doctors actually prescribe sessions for arthritis, post-surgery rehab and circulation issues, and the national health insurance covers part of the bill.

The clip mentions Hegykő, Balf and Bükfürdő, three working gyógyfürdő towns near Sopron. Sopron itself sits on the Austrian border, surrounded by the Fertő-Hanság wetlands and one of Hungary’s oldest wine regions. The thermal-bath habit predates the Habsburg empire and survived every regime since.
