How do you say nationalities in Hebrew (masculine vs feminine)?
A bicultural comic runs through every French cliché and tags each with the same refrain: «אני צרפתייה» (“I’m French”), before the punchline, that to the actual French, she’s totally Israeli. צרפתייה (tsarfatiya) is “a Frenchwoman,” and it shows how Hebrew genders nationalities.
A French man is צרפתי (tsarfati); a French woman adds the feminine ending to become צרפתייה. The pattern runs across the board: ישראלי / ישראלית (Israeli), אמריקאי / אמריקאית (American). Master the masculine form and the feminine usually just needs that extra ending. The joke lands because identity, unlike grammar, refuses to pick one box.
