What does “Hangosta Ivalaan” mean?

This brooding promo for home-grown Finnish drama promises stories «Murhia Hangosta Ivalaan» (“murders from Hanko to Ivalo”). Hangosta Ivalaan means “from Hanko to Ivalo,” and it’s the Finnish way to say “the length of the whole country,” from the southernmost town to deep into Lapland.

Hanko sits at Finland’s southern tip; Ivalo lies far up north. The pairing is the Finnish cousin of “from Land’s End to John o' Groats” or “coast to coast.” The trailer leans on the other national obsession too: “loputon talvi ja ikuinen kesä” (endless winter and eternal summer), the extremes that shape Finnish noir.
