Does “novelo” mean “novel” in Esperanto?
Announcing that her entry won a place in an Esperanto short-story anthology, this creator explains the contest’s name: the Interkultura Novelo-Konkurso, or “Intercultural Novelo Contest.” Novelo looks like English “novel,” but it means “short story.” A full-length novel is a romano — an entirely different, unrelated word.
The contest itself is real and ongoing — commonly abbreviated INK — and this creator’s winning entry was published alongside other writers', including a friend who took first prize. It’s a small, concrete example of Esperanto’s own literary culture continuing to produce new short fiction, contest by contest, rather than existing only as old translated classics.
