What does the suffix “-aĵo” mean in Esperanto?
Getting a septum piercing, this creator names the result herself, mid-explanation: “Mi supozas, ke ĝi nomiĝas traboraĵon, ĉar estas aĵo, kiu estis traborita” — “I suppose it’s called a traboraĵo, since it’s a thing connected with piercing.” -aĵ- turns a root into a concrete thing connected with it — not always strictly “the thing acted upon”: manĝaĵo (food) is a thing for eating, and here traboraĵo is the thing produced by piercing.
The same ending covers plenty of ordinary vocabulary this way — trinkaĵo (a beverage, from trinki, “to drink”) is something you drink, while presaĵo (a printout, from presi, “to print”) is something that was printed. The suffix doesn’t lock in one fixed active-or-passive relationship; it just names “the concrete thing tied to this root,” and context settles the rest.
